The Left-Hander’s
Survival Guide

Living counter-clockwise
in a clockwise world.

A warm, gently humorous collection of personal essays about growing up left-handed—and finding your way in a world designed for someone else.

From childhood classrooms to travel, music, family life and fountain pens, these stories explore the quiet art of adaptation. Illustrated throughout with my own pen-and-ink drawings.

The Crayon Incident

Before I ever smudged ink across a page, before detentions and hooked wrists, and before the word “cack-handed” drifted across a classroom, there was a crayon.

I don’t remember it myself. I was small. Three, perhaps four. Old enough to grip colour. Not old enough to understand ideology.

I picked up a crayon with my left hand.
